The Brand

Math and physics teacher in denmark during by day, beer-enthusiast by night. That was Mikkel Borg Bjergso before he had the idea of brewing beer himself. He didn't have to wait long for success. Inspired by the American craft beer hype he and his friend, Kristian Keller, studied several books on that topic and soon developped their own recipes. In 2005, his brother opened a beer shop. That was Mikkel's possibility to sell and distribute his own brewings. The big break-through followed soon after. Today Mikkel exports his beer to 40 countries. But as he lacks of an own brewery, he approaches the famous Proef Brouwerij in Belgium for brewing his recipes.

Unlike conventional copper Barleywine rather, it presents a clear amber color, very bright topped by a nice white foam. The nose is sweet, similar to triple, but here we find more interesting hops and fruit flavors: banana, candied orange peel, stone fruit, plum, cherry, peach, apricot, but also lavender aromas hay and bread. In the mouth we find various flavors of caramel, caramel brown sugar toffee, we also feel flavors of honey, mead, sweet fruit. Most noticeable special orange flavor because it does not seem to come from hops and recalls candied orange, orange liqueur ... More discreet but nonetheless present, there is resin flavors of earth, cellar. This sweet and candied beer is drunk easily. We almost forget its high alcohol content! This is certainly the best Barleywine home Mikkeller!
