Pilsener is a type of beer whose origin dates back to the 19th century. It was made in the city of Pilsen, located in the then Austro-Hungarian Empire. We can define it as a light coloured drink with an alcohol content that varies between 3 and 5% and is one of the most consumed beers in the world.
History of the Pilsener Beer
Until the middle of the 19th century, practically all the beers produced in the Bohemian region were of high fermentation and with a dark colour, something that was not liked by everyone.
Thus, in the year 1830, some citizens of the city of Pilsen were encouraged to found a brewery where they began experimenting with new beers of low fermentation, which provided a good flavour and, in addition, prolonged their period of consumption. The first Pilsener beer design came at the end of 1842, and soon competitors followed.
Taste and Formula*
The current Pilsener beers are very light and with a light colour, from pale gold to intense gold. It is also famous for combining a light colour with a strong and intense taste. They are fermented with low fermentation yeast and are made with Moravian malts, low hardness water and Czech hops from Zatec.
The fermentation of this type of beer is curious: the beer is stored in open barrels that were stored in basements, and the low fermentation takes place between 7 and 10 days, and at temperatures between 6 and 8 degrees.
Currently, you can find several brands that sell German Pilsener beers: Flensburger, Beck's, Bitburger, Fürstenberg, Herrenhäuser, König, Krombacher, Radeberger, St Pauli Girl, Veltins, Jever and Wernesgrüner. Today this type of beer is made in many places in the world, although the most famous of all is still Pilsener Urquell.
