In 1994, Nicolas and his team were confident they had identified the best lots for growing Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. First, Jose Galante, winemaker since 1975, bottling a small cut grapes from the oldest and most uniform batches of Uxmal vineyard (which later was called because of its location Agrelo vineyard in the district of Agrelo). 300 cases were divided wine Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon.
In 1995, Jose bottling the first Catena Alta Chardonnay grapes from Lot 4 of the Domingo vineyard in the cold region of Tupungato. The following year, in 1996, one hectare, correspondent to the Angelica vineyard lot 18, I give the ideal conditions to produce the best Malbec. It was then decided to develop its first Nicolas Catena Alta Malbec.
The 1997 year was an exceptional year for Cabernet Sauvignon. Nicolas Catena and Joseph Galante decided to create another top cuvee, which fulfilled the dream started in the 80s. The wine, named Nicolas Catena Zapata (Zapata is the maiden name of the mother of Nicholas) is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec. The launch took place in 2000, through a series of blind tastings conducted in USA and Europe, against the world's great wines like Chateau Latour, Chateau Haut Brion, Solaia, Caymus and Opus One in every tasting , Nicolas Catena Zapata wine came first or second.
