The Winery
Veuve Clicquot

The Champagne House Veuve Clicquot was founded in 1772 and taken over in 1805 by the then-widow Barbe-Nicole Clicquot. Better known as Veuve Clicquot (Widow Clicquot), not only was the 27-year-old the first woman to run a Champagne house, she is also credited with creating the first known blended rosé champagne by blending still red and white champagne wines. This process is still used today by the majority of champagne producers. She’s also said to have invented the riddling process to clarify Champagne. Madame Clicquot became known to her peers as “La Grande Dame” of Champagne.
