The DOCG Chianti Classico is found within the regions of Castellina, Gaiole and Radda de Chianti, and in part of Castelnuovo Berardegna y Poggibonsi, in the province of Sienna, in the lands belonging to Greve in Chianti, in part of Barberino, Val d’Elsa, San Casciano and Tavernelle Val di Pesa, in the province of Florence.
The DOCG Chianti Classico is made from the Sangiovese grapes in a quantity of between 70 and 100%, with the combination of Canaiolo Nero, up to a maximum of 10%, and of Malvasi di Chianti, with 6% at the most. The combination with other grapes in the area could be allowed to a maximum of 15% in special cases.
The wines belonging to the DOCG Chianti Classico have a minimum alcohol content of 12° and can be considered reserve wines with at least two years' aging, counting from the 1st of January after harvest and a later stay in the bottle of at least three months, in which case the alcohol content reaches 12.5°.
