The Coastal Region offers two different soil types that are useful for wine growing. One is the deep red clay which helps to retain moisture for the grapes and the other one is the light sandy earth of areas nearer to the shore which are known for their well-draining capacity. Furthermore lime and other stone-rich outcrops are used in order to give the grapes an additional flavour.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the most familiar of the red grapes cultivated in the Coastal Region although the Chardonnay, Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat Blanc are also quite popular. This zone is divided into several different sub-regions as Cape Point, Paarl, Swartland, Tygerberg, Darling, Stellenbosch, and Tulbagh.

One of the most outstanding districts is Darling. It stands for a very cool climate, partially due to its location near the Atlantic Ocean. The cool and rainy weather facilitates the production during extended growing seasons which not only adds flavour and a certain acidity to the white wine grapes, but also help to obtain very deep, rich red wines with quite indiviual characteristics.
