Constantia is a historic wine-growing region in the southern suburbs of Cape Town and, together with Stellenbosch and Paarl, is one of the most important wine regions in the region. History of the region The Constantia Winery was founded in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, second governor of the Cape of Good Hope. After his death in 1712, the area was divided into three parts:

  • Little Constantia
  • Groot Constantia
  • Bergvliet

In 1778, the region of Klein Constantia was bought by Hendrik Cloete, who started producing unique dessert wines with the Muscat Blanc variety. This legendary dessert wine was first introduced to the European aristocracy in 18th and 19th Century much appreciated. Also in the literature of Charles Dickens and Jane Austen this sweet wine found a place. A tragedy shook the area in the 1860s. The two plagues bubble and powdery mildew practically wiped out wine production in Constantia and the vineyards were largely forgotten until the 1980s. Today, unique wines are again produced in the region, which are successful not only nationally but also internationally. Geography of Constantia The area of Constantia stretches from the plain to the Constantiaberg. The highest vineyards reach 400 metres above sea level and are among the steepest in South America. These vineyards have a low average temperature due to the shade of the mountain and the sea breeze of the Atlantic Ocean. For this reason, the grapes have a fresh acidity. Constantia lies on ancient deposits of decomposed granite. These soils are well drained and fertile and have a high clay content. The water absorbed by the clay during the wet winters helps to supply the vines with moisture during the dry summers. As already mentioned, Constantia was divided into three different regions in 1685.

  • Little Constantia: Little Constantia was very popular worldwide in the 18th century due to the production of sweet wine!

Today Klein Constantia continues to produce some of the best South African wines and the best dessert wine in the world; wines that reflect the cool climate of Constantia and our historical tradition.

  • Groot Constantia: This region is located on the Cape Peninsula overlooking the beautiful False Bay. On both sides, there is an ocean and therefore a strong maritime climate prevails in this region.

Bergvliet: No longer exists as a wine region. Grape variety cultivated in Constantia On an area of 429 hectares, unique wines are produced here. Due to the cool climate, white grape varieties grow particularly well here, which is why 62% of the area is planted with white grape varieties. Red grape varieties account for 38%. Among the most popular grape varieties in the region are the following:

  • Sauvignon Blanc: This is a grape with green skins from the Bordeaux region in France. This grape variety is perfect for cooler regions.
  • Chardonnay: This grape is the 5th most manure grape in the world. It is a white grape variety. Today, Burgundy is considered the area of origin.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon: This grape variety comes from Bordelais and, with a vineyard area of 288.00 hectares, is considered the most popular grape variety in the world. It is a red grape variety.
  • Syrah: Another grape variety from France (Rhone Valley). In Australia, South Africa and the USA this variety is called Shiraz.
  • Merlot: This variety comes from France in the Bordeaux area.
