The Douro denomination of origin produce wine in a region known for its Port wines. This was the first officially recognized region, back in 1756, and it covers the Douro Valley, along the river, to Barqueiros, up to the border with Spain.

The crops belonging to the Douro DO extend along the rough slopes that are so common in this region. The proportion of the vines must be of at least 60% of the following strains: for the red wines, Bastardo, Donzelinho Tinto, Mourisco Red, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Cao or Touriga Nacional; for white wines, Donzelinho, Esgana-çaom, Folgazâo, Gouveia, Malvasia Fina, Rabigato, Viosinho and Códega.

Many of the wines from Douro are known by the name of the subregions from which they come from, like those of Alijó, Meda, Murça, Sabrosa and Vila Real. These are wines with low alcohol content, 12°, if we compare them with the other wines in the region, the Port wines, which reach 20°.
