It was Antoine-Francois de Fourcroy, Napoleon's personal physician, who had the idea to mix macerated mandarins with fine cognac. The result of this marriage is a liqueur that Napoleon himself considered one of his personal favourites, drinking it regularly. The recipe that Antoine-Francois de Fourcroy used was re-discovered in 1892 by Louis Schmidt. This is what he based the recipe for his Mandarine Napoléon on, keeping his own recipe a closely-guarded secret ever since.
Using only mandarins sourced from Sicily and Corsica, Mandarine Napoléon combines this high-quality citrus with a mix of spices. Green and black teas serve to erase that burning sensation that some liqueurs leave on the palate. Balance is achieved through the use of cloves, nutmeg, angelica, and cinnamon. All of these ingredients are distilled together before marriage with the finest aged cognac, sugar, and water. Natural colouring is achieved through the addition of carmine.

PRODUCTION DETAILS: This beautiful concoction has a fascinating history that dates back to the early 1800s, when the famous chemist Antoine-François de Fourcroy was tasked with creating a drink for the emperor Napoléon himself. The recipe was later found in the sunset of the 19th century and modified to create a drink based on the findings. Mandarine Napoléon is created from Mediterranean mandarin peels, which are macerated in an alcoholic base along with 20 other flavouring botanicals, including green tea, clover, coriander, and cumin. The mixture is then triple-distilled to obtain a pure elixir that is left to mature for at least three years before being blended with the finest cognac.
