You will like to know that…

The Château de Monluc can be found in the centre of Gascony, in the south of France. This winery has had a long and exciting history and now is the headquarters of an extensive winery. It is also known as the only producer of the famous Pousse Rapière. As the Gascony region of France is famous for its Armagnac, why would their signature aperitif not contain this regional spirit?

Chateau Monluc Pousse Rapière takes its name from the rapier, the long, lightweight sword that was the weapon of choice of the Three Musketeers, among others. This delightful beverage was invented by René Lassus in the 1960s, based on a family recipe which remains a closely guarded secret. What is known is that Pousse Rapière is a liqueur based on Armagnac which is distilled with herbs and botanicals to make a new and exciting spirit, with a notable orange flavour.

For the classic Pousse Rapière cocktail, one part Pousse Rapière liqueur is mixed with six parts Vin Sauvage, a sparkling dry white wine that is distilled from the same exact grapes. It is then finished off with ice and a slice of orange. The common ancestor makes these two spirits soulmates. You can mix Pousse Rapière with other sparkling wines, use it for cooking, and even pour it over your ice cream.

Elaboration of Château Monluc Pousse Rapière

Château Monluc Pousse Rapière

TASTING NOTES:

  • Colour: Château Monluc Pousse Rapière is a warm amber-orange hue.
  • Aroma: A heady nose of grapes and oranges in an aromatic marriage, with a hint of vanilla.
  • Taste: Rich sweet brandy and bitter orange flavours perfectly blended, strong and complex.

PRODUCER: Le Château de Monluc is on a hill in Saint-Puy, in the Gascony region of southwest France. Its long and storied history has led it naturally to the portfolio of wines and liqueurs it now produces. Romans brought wine to the area, Saracens brought stills, so a combination of viticulture and distillation was almost inevitable. Montluc claims to have originated Pousse Rapière, the region's most popular aperitif, and certainly it's the most successful producer.

COUNTRY: France

PRODUCTION DETAILS: Armagnac is the world's oldest brandy. The Armagnac liqueur Château Monluc Pousse Rapière , flavoured with bitter orange, is made to an ancient and well-guarded recipe. The name translates as ‘rapier's push', a rapier being the fine blade brought back to France from Italy by soldier Blaise de Montluc, made famous by The Three Musketeers, and adopted by the Gascons. Château Monluc Pousse Rapière has the same effect drunk neat, it is said; both fine and sharp, more delicate and dangerous than a blunt axe or broadsword. So it is usually enjoyed in a gorgeous cocktail invented at Montluc in 1960, one part liqueur to five parts Vin Sauvage, or sparkling wine, with an added sugar cube and an orange slice.
