Description · Château Lascombes

2002 Château Lascombes (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot)

The 2002 picking started on September 27 and ended on October 8. The growing season had been particularly cold and dry in the winter months, followed by a cool, wet spring.

These conditions had an adverse effect on the flowering process and led to coulure (aborted setting of the fruit), millerandage (stunted growth of the berries) and a significant decrease in yield. The unsettled summer weather that followed did not augur well for the vintage. Fortunately, September and October came to the rescue with exceptionally hot, sunny weather.

Despite the vagaries of the weather, de-suckering, de-leafing and crop thinning were carried out with meticulous care, keeping the vineyard in perfect shape and enabling the grapes to reach optimum ripeness at picking. The 2002 yield was very low : 26 hl/ha. Analyses and tastings showed a far higher potential in Cabernet Sauvignon than in 2001, and the Petit Verdot grapes were of remarkable quality.

For the 2002 vintage, Château Lascombes introduced vibrating, perforated sorting tables to select only the highest quality fruit. As in 2001, the alcoholic fermentation was preceded by a cold maceration. On November 20, the running off was complete. The wine was finally ready to go into barrels, 80% of which were new this year.

The 2002 vintage has a beautiful deep colour with attractive purple glints. It has a complex nose with hints of black fruit, coffee and toasted bread. Flavours of toast, black cherries, spice and chocolate combine to opulent effect on the palate before being rounded off by a long, slightly oaky finish.

2002 is a concentrated wine with great appeal and breed and which has promise for the future.

Chevalier de Lascombes has an attractive bright colour, wonderful complexity and can be enjoyed as of now.

We tested this Château Lascombes with my club mates.
Bright red and purple reflections. Tea aromas. Voluptuous in the mouth.
Did not seem well with fish, I would have preferred a vegetable stew.
