Description · Château Lascombes
2004 Château Lascombes (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot)
The hot, dry spring, which brought about a fabulous bud-burst and flowering, was an early sign of what turned out to be a bumper harvest. Subsequently, however, fickle weather during the summer caused some concern and it was thanks to the month of September, with its August-like weather, that guaranteed ripeness levels that hitherto seemed uncertain.
Faced with a large crop and a high number of berries, deleafing and drastic crop thinning were necessary to keep the grapes healthy until they reached perfect ripeness levels. The harvest was eventually carried out from the 1st to the 25th October ! The yield of 44 hl/ha was an excellent compromise between the quality and the quantity of the vintage.
One change was introduced for the 2004 vintage: the harvest reception now takes place on the ground floor of the vat cellar. After the usual meticulous sorting, the grapes are now tipped into stainless steel bins which are transported to the second floor via the lifts. However, the wine-making and ageing techniques remain exactly the same. All in all, the 2004 vintage is displaying great quality, as the wines have a deep colour and the total polyphenols indexes are well above those of previous years.
With such structure, the 2004 vintage is coping easily with the 100% new barrels. The colour is amazing, almost black with light purple glints. The nose is complex with layers of black fruits, such as blackberries, bilberries and black cherries as well as flowers and spices. The Cabernet Sauvignon, incredibly consistent in quality in 2004, brings finesse to the blend and gives Château Lascombes 2004 power and concentration on the palate whilst maintaining a delicacy and unctuousness that mingle well with a dense, tight-knit tannic structure of good pedigree. The finish is long and flavoursome. Château Lascombes 2004 is definitely to be ranked among the greatest Margaux of this vintage.
The Chevalier de Lascombes 2004, though less opulent, displays charm with aromas of small red berry fruits and hints of vanilla.

Bright red and purple reflections. Tea aromas. Voluptuous in the mouth.
Did not seem well with fish, I would have preferred a vegetable stew.

Château Lascombe Margaux 2009
This Margaux enlightened my brunch hour with friends.
I brought it to my parents' home and we tried it together.
