2016 La Crema Monterey Pinot Noir (Pinot Noir)
- View: 2016 La Crema Monterey Pinot Noir is a medium-ruby-coloured wine.
- Nose: The complexity of this wine's nose is defined by aromas of strawberries, raspberries, cloves, and cedar.
- Mouth: A light and elegant wine in which flavours of strawberries, plums, and raspberries are combined with some vanilla and a hint of spice. It is a medium acidity, light-bodied wine with juicy tannins and a convincing earthy and spicy finish.
VINEYARD: 2016 La Crema Monterey Pinot Noir comes to us from the La Crema winery, more specifically from their Monterey vineyards. Monterey is known as one of the coolest winegrowing areas and its climate deeply influences the grapes ripening. Sunshine - both direct and through ocean reflection - tends to speed up the ripening while early morning fog and cool winds slow it down. In that way, the grapes have the time to accumulate enough sugar while keeping the necessary acidity. The 2015 growing season was a very dry one, which lead to an earlier ripening and a reduced yield, resulting in higher quality grapes.
GRAPES: 100% Pinot Noir.
AGING: The wine was aged in 100% French oak (of which 23% was new) for nine months.
PREPARATION: The grapes were harvested manually in whole bunches, taking special care to avoid damaging the clusters. After hand-sorting and destemming in the winery, the Pinot Noir went through a cold soak process for three days, to ensure aromatic complexity and an optimal colour. What followed was drainage of juice and fermentation in open top fermenters. During fermentation, the grapes were punched down three times a day. When fermentation was complete, the wine was pressed off the skins with a gentle basket press.
PAIRING: 2016 La Crema Monterey Pinot Noir is ideally paired with roasted chicken or a well-done filet mignon, if you are a meat lover. It also pairs surprisingly well with salmon or seafood pasta.
