Description · Château Latour

2000 Château Latour (Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot)

The weather conditions

The mildew did not spare most of the regions'wine growing, including the Medoc and Château Latour.

The precocity of the terroir, due to its privileged microclimate, induced the appearance of the disease's first symptoms in the beginning of May, which did not have any bad effects on the rest of the vegetative cycle.

That precocity was the result of a scorching and wet weather.

In June, the weather improved and the rainfall showed below seasonal average. In August, the rainfall was half the average.

Therefore, the second half of the vegetative cycle took place under a very dry climate, slowing down the vegetation and thwarting the development of the mildew in the spring.

Flowering took place under a mild and wet weather. Along with damages caused by the mildew, the oldest plots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot suffered from flower abortion and "millerandage".

The weather in July and August was extremely favorable to achieving a rarely complex grape constitution and the top temperatures were beneficial to a progressive maturity : the maximum temperature was 35°C.

September was similar to August. A dry weather, until the day before grape harvest, contributed to improve the maturity of the grapes. On the 19th of September, right before harvest, 35mm of rainfall were beneficial to the grapes by removing impurities. At the end of the month, we recorded occasional rain showers and storms but the end of harvesting took place under a favorable weather.

The harvest :

We began the harvest with the Merlot of the "Enclos" on September 22 and for the first time with vine plants of mixed varieties on the Cabernet Sauvignon plots.

The harvesting team started picking the Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon of the "Enclos" on September 28, but due to the uneven maturity on the vineyards of Forts de Latour and of Pauillac we decided to take a 4 day break.

The harvests ended on October 11.

Vintage quality and tasting comments

Once the first vinifications were completed, we could confirm the extraordinary concentration of the berries that was first noticed during the maturity controls.

The color is dark and deep and the wines have a powerful and harmonious structure.

Right before harvesting, it seemed that the Cabernets' skins were firm and slightly crushing, containing a sweet juice and a fine acidity. The first tasting revealed dense structures and the tannins' quality seemed to be better than that of the 1996 or 1990 vintages.

The Grand Vin is harmonious and combines race, rigor, complexity and a wonderful finesse of the fruit.

At this stage, the aromas reveal notes of prunes, dried fruits, tobacco, dark chocolate, and spices.

The acidity levels (between 3,7 and 4,2 g/l d' H2SO4) are higher than those of the latest vintages.

Quality : Truly exceptional year

Château Latour 1Er Grand Cru Classé Pauillac 2000

The Chateau Latour 2000 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The 2000 Latour has a dark purple color with subtle tones in the nose of tobacco minerals, a hint of vanilla, cherry, graphite and leather. roasted meat and a slight scorched earth character. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, with delicious sweet tannins and a refreshing long finish. The 2000 is a great wine that the next 15 years will go even further to develop the 2000 is one of the best vintages and is part of the magic of the list in 2003, 2008 and 2010.

Château Latour 2014
Château La Tour, my friends wine.
The colour was between red and brown. Very good aromas of vanilla. A nice woody flavour.
Better with vegetables.

I tried it with some wine tasters who are friends of mine.
Very dark Bordeaux colour. You can appreciate the tobacco smell. Guilty of too much acidity.
Perfect for starters and appetizers.
