Castile-Leon is the largest autonomous region in Spain. It borders Asturias and Cantabria to the north, the Basque Country, La Rioja and Aragon to the east, Madrid and Castile-La Mancha to the southeast, Extremadura to the south and Portugal and Galicia to the west. About 75,000 hectares of the territory of Castile-Leon, mainly around the basin of the river Duero, is dedicated to viticulture: About 6% of all Spanish wine is produced here.
The Vino de la Tierra from Castilla y León
The Indicación Geográfica Protegida (IPG) Vino de la Tierra (V.T.) of Castilla y León, was founded in 2000 with the aim of protecting quality wines, producers and wineries in the region that do not fall under other designations of origin. In addition to this PGI, there are 9 Denominaciones de Origen in the region - Ribera del Duero, Cigales, Rueda, Toro, Bierzo, Arlanza, Arribes, Tierras de León and Tierra del Vino de Zamora - and three Denominations of "Vinos de Calidad" - Sierra de Salamanca, Valtiendas and Valles de Benavente.
The V.T. de Castilla y León designation covers all the more than 300 municipalities of the Autonomous Community where white, rosé and red wines are produced from grapes grown in vineyards entered in the Castile-Leon Wine Register. The designation also includes liqueur wines, sparkling wines produced according to traditional methods, sparkling wines, and dessert wines.
The rules governing these wines are laid down by the Consejería de Agricultura y Ganadería de la Junta de Castilla y León, whose main body is the Asociación de Bodegas Elaboradoras y Embotelladoras de Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León (ASOVINTCAL).
The climate of Castile-León
The Autonomous Community enjoys a rather extreme continental climate, with temperatures of up to 39º in the warmer months and 12ºC below zero in the winter months. Rainfall is also low, so it is important to develop good strategies for water use in the vineyards. It can, therefore be concluded that human intervention was essential to confirm Castile-Leon as one of the most famous wine regions in Spain.

D.O.V.T. Castilla y León Wines
The uniqueness of white wines and rose wines of V.T. Castilla y León is due to the qualities of the most representative varieties in the region, such as Verdejo, Godello and Prieto Picudo, their adaptation to the environment and the intervention of man, who has used the most modern technologies to obtain a high quality product.
The [red wines] (https://www.drinksandco.com/wines/type/red)** owe their characteristics to the balanced ripening process of the grapes, made possible by the harsh climate: The high temperatures at the end of the cycle and the difference in temperature between day and night during the summer months allow optimal phenolic maturation for the production of wines with a high ageing potential.
The spumanti wines also differ from those of other regions because they are made from local grapes such as Godello, Verdejo and Prieto Picudo. After all, the [enriched wines] (https://www.drinksandco.com/wines/type/sweet) and the **Passito are perhaps the most traditional because they have been produced in the area since ancient times.
